Women's Soccer Drops 4-3 OT Heartbreaker in Lock Haven

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team battled from behind to take a late lead before falling in overtime to Lock Haven University, 4-3 at Hubert Jack Stadium in Lock Haven, PA. The non-conference setback drops STAC to 1-2, while Lock Haven improves to 2-2 on the season.

Lock Haven dominated the early minutes of the contest but were kept off the board when STAC goalkeeper Avaree Rainford came up with a big save, deflecting Madison Taylor's shot over the crossbar in the 10th minute of action. The Lady Spartans weathered the early storm and the contest evened out before the competitors settled for a scoreless tie at halftime.

St. Thomas Aquinas carried momentum into the early second half, as Becky Torres' rush and shot was turned back by Lady Eagles keeper Breona Browner, but the ensuing corner kick created havoc, as it was deflected into the Lock Haven net for an own goal and a 1-0 STAC advantage just three minutes after the break. The hosts drew even seven minutes later when Taylor had another opportunity off a corner kick and this time made no mistake to tie the game at 1-1.

Jenna Hunter put LHU on top off a set piece just outside the Lady Spartans box, hitting the top corner of the net to make the score 2-1 at the 68:57 mark. Less than three minutes later, STAC battled back when Nicole Eisenhauer took a corner kick and sent it to the the near post where Arieta Lekaj was there to tap the equalizer home through traffic with 23:18 remaining in the second half.

With just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation, Lady Spartan freshman Calli Moise came up big. Off a set piece outside the Lady Eagles box, Moise drilled her first shot off the wall but was able to capture the rebound and squeeze it under the arm of the diving Browner to put the visitors back on top. The hosts would equalize when a long cross eluded Rainford, setting up a corner kick that was headed in by Jamie Hunter off a rebound in front with just 6:31 left.

Lock Haven held possession for much of the overtime session, resulting in yet another goal off a corner kick. The well-placed cross created a mad scramble, but after several attempts it was LHU's Amanda Alex putting the ball over the line for the golden goal at 97:14 to end the wild affair.

The Lady Spartans open the East Coast Conference of their schedule this Saturday, September 15, in a 4:00 pm start at Dowling College. They will play their fifth straight road game to start the season at nearby Dominican College on Wednesday, September 19 before finally playing their home opener, hosting Molloy in an ECC match-up on Saturday, September 22.
