The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team scored on a first minute penalty kick by Nisha Flinn but settled for a 1-1 tie at Molloy College in an East Coast Conference battle. STAC snaps its four-game losing streak and stands at 1-4-1, 0-1-1, while Molloy is now 4-2-1, 0-2-1. The contest was originally scheduled to be hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas, but was moved to Molloy due to unplayable field conditions.

Less than a minute into the affair, STAC quickly broke the scoreless deadlock as Priya Bhatti was taken down in the penalty area and Flinn converted the penalty kick just 36 seconds into play. Neither team was able to provide a sustained attack thereafter, as the Lady Spartans carried that 1-0 lead as well as a 4-3 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes.

After the break the story was quite different, however, as the host Lions unleashed a barrage in the opening minutes that included a flurry of seven consecutive corner kicks inside a five minute span. Molloy posted the first eight shots of the second stanza, but the Lady Spartans appeared on the verge of holding on thanks to some fine saves from netmineder Amanda Volpe.

That changed on Molloy's 12th corner kick of the game - and 10th in the second half - when Tricia Zarro put a loose ball home at 80:26 to draw the hosts even for the first time since the opening seconds. Alyssa Faller was credited with the assist for the Lions. Despite Molloy's 12-2 edge in shots in the second half, the score remained tied after regulation.

With just over three minutes remaining in the first overtime session, STAC's Becky Torres had the best chance of the session from in close, beating Lions keeper Nicole DellaPorta but hitting the post. Once again, it was Torres with the best opportunity in the second OT, but her shot skidded just off target.

Despite having the tying goal scored against them late in regulation, the Lady Spartans held the edge in the extra time, outshooting the hosts by a 7-2 margin. Overall Molloy had the 17-13 edge in shots, 13-1 in corner kicks, and Volpe was credited with four saves to Dellaporta's three.

After playing five road games in a 12-day span, the Lady Spartans will now enjoy a week off before returning to action. STAC will host LIU-Post in an ECC double-header next Saturday, September 22, with the women's teams starting the action at 12:30, followed by the men's game at 2:30.
