Queens Holds off STAC Women's Soccer, 2-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team battled until the final minutes but came up short in a 2-0 setback against Queens College in an East Coast Conference match at Spartan Field. Queens improves to 8-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 with the win, while the Lady Spartans remain winless at 0-8-0, 0-5-0.

STAC got off to a strong start, recording the first three shots of the afternoon, but the visitors began to establish ball control thereafter. Still, the teams remained scorless in a well-played first half until Queens got on the board in the 37th minute. Lorena sent a dangerous cross toward net that was tipped off the crossbar by Lady Spartans goalkeeper Lauren Morales, but Ashley Martin was on the spot to head the rebound home.

After leading in shots by an 11-3 margin in the first half, Queens continued the edge after the break, however the Lady Spartans held tight, remaining just one shot away from the equalizer until the tilt's final minutes. Russi would put the contest out of reach with less than four minutes to play, taking a cross from Elizabeth Eberhart for the final score of the day.

Morales made nine saves in keeping the game close, while Queens keeper Mersina Ornesto was called on to make two stops in recording the shutout.

The Lady Spartans return to action on Wednesday, October 16, when New York Institute of Technology visits Spartan Field for an East Coast Conference battle. Game time is set for 12:30 pm, as the front end of a double-header featuring the men's squads starting at 3:30.
