Stam OT Goal Lifts STAC Women's Soccer to 2-1 win Over Penn College

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team defeated Penn College, 2-1, thanks to Danielle Stam's overtime goal at Spartan Field. Paige Montillo's goal sent the game to extra time, while Vicky Saravia added two assists for the Lady Spartans, who captured their first victory of the season and stand at 1-10-0. Penn College of Technology dropped to 9-6-2 with the loss.

Coming off a loss against LIU Post just 24 hours earlier, the Lady Spartans got off to a sluggish start, yet still carried the majority of play in the first half, outshooting the Wildcats by a 14-7 margin. That had little effect, as Penn's Kiersti Craig-Sovic curled a free kick from just outside the box beyond the hands of helpless STAC goalkeeper Lauren Morales to put the visitors ahead in the 18th minute of play.

STAC would pick up the intensity after the break, with Mae Comerford's early standing as her team's best scoring chance of the day to that point, though being turned aside by Penn netminder Colleen Bowes.

That would still prove to be a big play in the game, as the resulting corner kick was put into dangerous territory by Nisha Flinn, with Saravia's first attempt blocked in front before being drilled home by Montillo in the 53rd minute to tie the score.

St. Thomas Aquinas carried the majority of the play thereafter, but the turning point of the game came on a diving Morales save off a dangerous attempt by Robyn Beddow with just under eight minutes remaining in regulaton to preserve the deadlock.

The extra session belonged to the Lady Spartans, registering all three shots on goals as well as all three corner kicks. Once again it was a corner that set up the deciding tally as Flinn once again served a nice ball into the area with Saravia getting the first touch in front. Stam, who narrowly missed a scoring opportunity just moments before, made no mistake in converting the Golden Goal at the 94:46 mark.

Morales made five saves in all while Bowes turned aside 13 in the Penn College net, with the Lady Spartans enjoying a 28-14 advantage in shots overall.

The Lady Spartans will play their third game in five days when they travel to face Lincoln (Pa) on Wednesday, October 23 at 3:00 pm. They will return to Spartan Field to close out the season with a pair of East Coast Conference tilts, facing Molloy College on October 26 and Roberts Wesleyan on November 1, with both games starting at 12:00 noon.
