Lady Spartans Soccer Falls Short in 2-1 Setback Against Molloy

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team saw its two-game winning streak come to a close in a 2-1 East Coast Conference loss to Molloy College at Spartan Field. Mae Comerford had the lone STAC goal as the Lady Spartans dropped to 2-11 overall and 1-8 in ECC play. Molloy improved to 3-12-0, 3-4-0 with the win.

An evenly-played first half appeared to be heading for a scoreless deadlock, but Molloy had other ideas in the waning seconds. Jessica Malone sent a dangerous cross into the penalty area and teammate Caroline Rodgers was on the spot to head it just inside the post with 22 seconds left to put the Lions up by a 1-0 count.

STAC answered back at the 73:45 mark, when Paige Montillo's header was deflected into the path of teammate Mae Comerford, who drilled it home to tie the score. The celebration was short-lived, however, as the visitors struck back just 75 seconds later. Allison Sloper sent a corner kick into the penalty area, where Sami Saad put a head on it to beat Lady Spartans goalkeeper Lauren Morales with exactly 15:00 to play.

Molloy carried the better of the shots in the second half, posting a 14-6 edge and 21-13 for the game overall. Morales recorded eight saves with Lions netminder Nicole DellaPorta was credited with six in picking up the win.

The Lady Spartans wrap up the 2014 season against Roberts Wesleyan in an ECC tilt on Friday, November 1 at 12:00 pm at Spartan Field. It is the front end of a double-header which will see the men's teams play at 2:30 pm.
