Women's Soccer Comes Up Short in 2-1 Setback Against Bloomfield

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team received a second-half goal from Mae Comerford but it was not enough in a 2-1 loss to Bloomfield College at Spartan Field. STAC remains winless on the season, falling to 0-4-0, while Bloomfield picked up its first victory to improve to 1-3-1.

After battling through an evenly-played first half with few scoring chances, the Lady Spartans found themselves battling a deficit for the second straight game. On Saturday, St. Thomas Aquinas rallied from a 3-0 hole to draw within one against the University of Bridgeport before falling to a 5-2 defeat.

This time, it was Bloomfield's Sammy Bucknell breaking in alone and scoring on a helpless Lauren Morales in the 49th minute to break the deadlock. Just 15 minutes later, Morales nearly bailed her team out with a spectacular save on a header from Bucknell, but with the ball laying precariously on the goal line, Kelly Stites was there to drill it home to put the visitors up by a pair.

Once again, the Lady Spartans showed their battle, responding just two minutes later. Lindsay Sansone saw her solid chance stopped by goalkeeper Sashagay Spence, but Comerford was there to draw her team to within 2-1 with 24 minutes remaining.

STAC applied some pressure thereafter, but was unable to find the equalizing tally, with Spence turning aside six shots while Morales recorded seven saves while taking the loss.

The Lady Spartans will now hit the road, traveling to take on Mercy College at 12:00 noon this Saturday, September 21 in an East Coast Conference match-up. They will then play six of the following seven games on home turf at Spartan Field.
