Sansone Goal Lifts STAC Women's Soccer Past Queens, 1-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team recorded a 1-0 East Coast Conference victory at Queens College on the strength of Lindsey Sansone's first-half tally. Amanda Volpe made seven saves for STAC, which improved to 5-3-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the ECC, with Queens falling to 2-6-2, 0-4-1.

Weather conditions were a challenge on a brisk, rainy afternoon, but the Lady Spartans wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Just one tick past the ten minute mark, Sansone was on the spot, converting a header over charging Knights' keeper Mersina Onesto, with Maddison Lord credited with the helper.

STAC outshot Queens, 8-7 in the first half, and little did either team know that the lone goal would hold up for the remainder of the contest. Volpe was strong in net, making four saves in the first half and three more in the second, to preserve her first solo shutout of the season.

Queens held a 13-10 overall margin in the final shot tally, but the Lady Spartans held the Knights off to earn their second conference win of the campaign, moving into fifth place among the 10 schools in the ECC standings.

The Lady Spartans will play their next four straight at home, starting this Wednesday, October 15 against Post University. The 1:00 pm non-conference start will precede the men's ECC battle with UDC.
