Women Soccer Season Closes as STAC Drops Finale at Bridgeport

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team closed out the 2014 season with a 7-0 East Coast Conference setback at the hands of the University of Bridgeport. The Lady Spartans finished the season with a 6-7-2 overall record, 2-6-1 in the ECC, while the Purple Knights improved to 11-3-2, 4-3-1.

After a tough 1-0 loss to Molloy on Saturday ended their aspirations for a post-season berth, the Lady Spartans came out flat against a tough Bridgeport squad. While the game remained scoreless midway through the first half, the hosts carried the play and when they finally hit the net, the goals would come often.

Amanda Mauro scored on an assist from Danielle Puddefoot at 23:07 to break the seal, and those two would combine to inflict a lot more damage on the afternoon. UB posted three more goals before the first half was complete, and dominated the Lady Spartans with an 11-0 shots edge.

With three more goals in the first 15 minutes after the break, UB was in control and cruised to victory. Mauro would add three assists to go with her goal, and Puddefoot would hit the net three time, two of which were on assists from Mauro. Sophie Sorkvist added two goals and an assist.

STAC keeper Amanda Volpe recorded eight saves and a pair of Purple Knights' keepers combined for two stops.

Though the final contest was a disappointing one, the season was memorable for the Lady Spartans soccer team, with their six victories equalling the program's highest total since the 2007 season.
