Nationally Ranked Mercy Holds Off STAC Women's Soccer, 2-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team fell to #14 nationally-ranked Mercy College, 2-0, in an East Coast Conference contest at Spartan Field. The Lady Spartans dropped to 6-4-2 overall and 2-4-1 in ECC play, with Mercy taking its 13th straight victory to improve to 13-1-0, 7-0-0.

Both teams played solid defense in the early minutes, keeping opposing chances to a minimum, but the visitors hit the scoreboard first at 20:57. Danielle Deeb's free kick from just outside the box short-hopped STAC keeper Amanda Volpe, and Jessica Carillo was there to convert the rebound for her 7th goal of the season.

STAC remained undaunted despite recording just one shot in the first half, holding the Mavericks to only four. The Lady Spartans missed a golden opportunity to tie the score midway through the second half when a corner kick slipped dangerously through the hands of Mercy keeper Nicole Augustine, but the ball trickled through the six yard box with no STAC player able to put it home.

Mercy would convert a big insurance goal at 71:37 when Jessica DeLeon's pretty cross from the left side found a streaking Mackenzie Cochran, who converted from in close to provide the final margin of victory.

Volpe made seven saves for STAC while Augustine was credited with four, as the Mavericks outshot St. Thomas Aquinas by an 11-6 total on the afternoon.

The Lady Spartans return to action for a non-conference tilt with Georgian Court on Wednesday, October 22 at 4:00 pm at Spartan Field. They will celebrate Senior Day with their final home game on Saturday, October 25 against Molloy College at 2:30, following the men's game at 12:00 noon.
