Kerrigan's Late Strike Lifts Lady Spartans to 2-1 Win Over NYIT

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team  captured its third straight win, as Kathryn Kerrigan's late tally lifted the Lady Spartans to a 2-1 East Coast Conference victory over NYIT at Spartan Field. With five straight home games to start the season, STAC was  near perfect, improving to 4-0-1 on the season and 1-0 in ECC play, with NYIT falling to 1-3-1, 0-1-1.

St. Thomas Aquinas carried the play in the early moments but it was the visiting Bears that got on the board first, as Dina Simonian's shot from the top of the box found its way through goalkeeper Amanda Volpe's hands at the 10:40 mark.

It marked the fourth time in their first five games that the Lady Spartans faced an early deficit, and for the fourth time they would be undeterred in earning a result. Vicky Saravia took a nice touch pass from Annalise Warren in the box and beat NYIT keeper Brianna Bollitteri at 30:31 to even the score, which would carry into halftime.

NYIT battled back in the second half but Volpe stood firm, until Kerrigan netted the second goal of her freshman campaign in the waning minutes. The West Haverstraw native converted a Bears turnover, beating substitute goalkeeper Vanessa Cordoba at 81:57 with what would stand up as the winning tally.

Each team tallied 11 shots in the evenly played match, with Volpe making six saves - all in the second half - and NYIT's tandem combining for five saves.

The Lady Spartans will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to play LIU Post on Saturday, September 20 at 12:00 noon. They will then enjoy a week off before returning to Spartan Field to host Dowling College on Saturday, September 27, also in a noon start.
