The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team battled before falling to a 2-1 overtime defeat in an East Coast Conference tilt at Mercy College. Alyssa Rosania's goal late in the second half sent the contest to extra time but the Lady Spartans fell to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in ECC play, with Mercy improving to 5-3-2, 3-2-0.
Despite being held without a shot over the first 45 minutes, the Lady Spartans held tough against the defending conference champs, holding the hosts to just five shots of their own in a scoreless first half.
Mercy finally broke through at exactly the 60 minute mark when Haley Noble's header beat STAC netminder Courtney Dumain to make the score 1-0. That goal looked as though it would hold up until Lindsey Sansone's cross found Rosania at the head of the box and the freshman made no mistake, converting her team-leading eighth goal of the season with just 3:51 remaining on the clock.
That was enough to send the game to overtime, but the Mavericks would waste little time finding the Golden Goal, as Ileen Mejia was sent in alone and beat a helpless Dumain just 1:43 into the extra session. Mercy outshot the Lady Spartans by a 12-5 margin but Dumain was tough in net, recording six saves on the afternoon.
The Lady Spartans travel to face Molloy on Friday, October 16, before returning to Spartan Field to host the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday, October 21, with both contests being East Coast Conference battles.
