The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team fell to a 5-2 loss in an East Coast Conference battle at Spartan Field. Kelsey Ardizzone scored her first two career goals for the Lady Spartans, who fell to 3-10-0, 1-6-0, while Bridgeport improved to 14-1, 6-0.
Entering the contest, the Purple Knights were ranked #5 in the country in the NSCAA national poll, and the visitors needed just 27 seconds to get on the board after a pretty give-and-go. The game would settle in, however, and the Lady Spartans would have their chances, culminating with Ardizzone's first from Lindsey Sansone at 21:24 to tie the score.
That score would hold through the final 10 minutes of the half, when Bridgeport opened the score up with a trio of goals in a three-minute span to open a 4-1 gap with just under seven minutes to play in the half. Still, the Lady Spartans were not done as Ardizzone converted a nice feed from Brianna Flores at 43:10, to make the score 4-2. The wild first half ended with UB converting a final tally with 0.5 seconds to go in the half.
Surprisingly, that would be the final goal of the afternoon, as the teams battled through a scoreless second half. The Purple Knighs held a lead in shots but only by a surprisingly narrow 23-17 margin, as STAC actually held a 8-7 advantage in the second half. Lauren Morales took the loss in the Lady Spartan net, playing the first half and recording five saves while Courtney Dumain made three stops in the second half.
The Lady Spartans are back in action on Sunday, October 25, hosting Felician College in a non-conference contest starting at 2:00 pm.
