The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team took a late lead before falling to Malone Univerisity, 4-3 in overtime at Spartan Field. Lindsey Sansone had a goal and an assist for STAC, which fell to 2-3 on the season while the visitors from Ohio improved to 2-2.
Malone jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead within the first 15 minutes of action, but the Lady Spartans remained poised in playing a strong 45 minutes.
That paid dividends just 1:35 into the second stanza when Francesca Giglio converted Lindsey Sansone's pass to cut the deficit in half. With time becoming a factor, Sansone hit the net with a beautiful cross from Annalise Warren at 69:41 to draw the hosts even.
STAC continued to press for the go-ahead goal in the waning minutes but came up empty until the 85:19 mark. With overtime looming, Warren sent another pretty feed into the box and Priya Bhatti's second goal of the season gave the Lady Spartans their first lead of the day and an apparent victory.
Malone would change the story with just 3:12 remaining, as Christine Najjar found the equalizer. That score would hold up into the second overtime when, with a tie looming on the horizon, Brianna Smith scored her second of the day, sending the Pioneers to a Golden Goal victory with just 1:02 remaining on the clock.
Courtney Dumain entered the game in the second half in relief of Lauren Morales and took the hard-luck loss in the STAC net, while Leah Rauscher earned the triumph in the Malone net. Though Malone held a 16-9 shots advantage, it was not indicitive of the strong effort put forth by St. Thomas Aquinas, which was coming off a 4-3 overtime victory at Lincoln University just three days earlier.
The Lady Spartans travel to Dowling College for their East Coast Conference opener on Saturday, September 19, before returning to Spartan Field to host Daemen in another ECC tilt on Friday, September 25.
