STAC Women's Soccer Drops Tough 2-1 Battle to Concordia in Overtime

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team fell to a 2-1 defeat in overtime against Concordia College at Spartan Field. The loss was the Lady Spartans' first of the season as they fell to 2-1, while Concordia notched its first win to stand at 1-1.

STAC had the advantage in play early and converted just under 20 minutes in, with Nicole Rivera feeding Victoria DeMarco for her third tally of the season. The Lady Spartans were unable to build on their lead, and Clipper forward Sara Calvert found a loose ball in the box and hit the net to even the score with just under nine minutes to play in the session.

Each team enjoyed numerous scoring chances in the second half, with STAC accounting for the majority of them. The Lady Spartans misfired on several good chances, while Concordia netminder Stephanie Wilczynski made the difference with a handful of stellar saves.

Despite a 27-8 STAC lead in shots, the game would remain tied at 1-1 through regulation and the visitors would waste little time in bringing the affair to a close. Calvert and Jimena Garcia Risoto sliced through the Lady Spartans defense on a pretty passing combination, with Calvert scoring her second of the game on a helpless Courtney Dumain just 1:13 into extra time. Wilczynski ended the day with nine saves to earn the win.

The Lady Spartans will hit the road Thursday to face the University of New Haven before returning to Spartan Field on Monday, September 12, hosting Assumption in a 3:00 pm start.
