Spartans Fall Short in 2-1 Setback to Molloy

The St. Thomas Aquinas College soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Molloy College in an East Coast Conference contest at Spartan Field. The Spartans are now 5-7-1 on the season and 3-4 in conference play, while Molloy now stands at 5-9, 4-3.

Scoring chances were sparse in an evenly played first half, but the visitors struck for the decisive tallies just before the end of the session. Adam Carnwath sent long pass into the box for Dan Massey, who outraced STAC netminder Jack Nicholson and tucked the ball into the corner at 42:20 to give the Lions the lead. Just over a minute later, Andy Boylan's long free kick was touched in the area by Joey Gahan, and Carnwath was on the spot to convert at 43:24 for a 2-0 lead.

STAC made it interesting at 56:55 when Stavros Strati collected a turnover and his run down the right side culminated in a finsh past a sprawling Raul Bonilla to cut the deficit in half. That was as close as it was to get, however, as Molloy did a strong job of keeping play in the attacking zone in the waning minutes. The Lions held a narrow 9-7 advantage in shots in the defensive struggle.

The Spartans return home on Saturday, October 21, to host LIU Post at Spartan Field. Double-header ECC action starts with the women's teams squaring off at 12:30, followed by the men at 3:00 pm.
