Moreau's OT Talley Lifts Lady Spartans to 4-3 Win over Post in Opener

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Post University, 4-3, in overtime in the 2017 season opener at Spartan Field. Mekenzi Moreau's second goal of the game was the winner.

In the game's early minutes, it appeared the outcome would be very different, as Post had scoring opportunities before converting on Fenna Maarse's goal at the 6:48 mark. That lead increased to 2-0 when Katharins Mertz scored from outside the box at 22:35, and the Lady Spartans were outshot by a 7-1 margin.

One save changed the momentum drastically, as Merthz was awarded a penalty kick just under five minutes into the second half. Lady Spartans goalkeeper Courtney Dumain came up big, diving to her right to make the save and keep the margin within reach. The game changed in a second half flash that saw STAC stun its visitors with a trio of goals in a span of less than five minutes. Kathryn Kerrigan's free kick caught the crossbar, but Victoria DeMarco was on the spot to convert the rebound, putting the hosts on the board just 6:44 after the halftime break.

At 54:29, STAC was awarded a penalty kick and Moreau made no mistake, drilling her PK to tie the score at 2-2. Less than two minutes later, Kerrigan gave her squad its first lead of the season with a beautiful chip off a feed from Nicole Wagner, capping STAC's three-goal outburst over a 4:30 span.

With time winding down, Post found the equalizer, as late substitution Imelda Lazaro cranked a bullet from 35 yards out that glanced off Dumain's glove and into the top corner, tying the score with just 2:04 remaining.

While the contest would go to overtime, the Lady Spartans would once again show their resilience, wasting little time in converting the winner. Wagner was in the play again, with Moreau providing the Golden Goal just over a minute into the extra session to send the hosts home happy.

The Lady Spartans take their act on the road, traveling to Georgian Court for a Labor Day matinee on Monday before returning to Spartan field for their next two straight. They host Felician on Thursday, September 7 at 4:00 pm, then Daemen pays a call for the East Coast Conference season opener on Saturday, September 16, at 11:00 am.
