Late Goals Spark STAC as Lady Spartans Top Queens, 2-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team rode a pair of second half goals to a 2-0 East Coast Conference victory over Queens College at Spartan Field. The Lady Spartans record improved to 2-4-1 overall with the victory, and 1-1 in ECC play, with Queens falling to 1-6-2, 0-2-1.

Queens held a 6-2 advantage in shots but the teams remained in a scoreless deadlock through halftime. After more than 70 minutes into a 0-0 tie, STAC appeared to be building a dangerous attack when the Lady Spartans were incorrectly whistled for being offside. Recognizing the error, the referee awarded STAC a free kick from 30 yards out.

On a beautifully executed set, Nicole Wagner sent a nice touch to Marissa Connolly, making a run down the right side. Connolly sent a perfect cross to the back post, where Brianna Flores put a header into the back of the net, putting the hosts ahead at 73:26.

Just over two minutes later, a long ball was misplayed at the Queens backline, sending Sarah Colotti in alone on goal, with her move around goalkeeper Nicole Cranny resulting in an empty-net finish by Mekenzi Moreau, with her first of the year at 75:28 giving the Lady Spartans their final margin of victory. Despite being outshot by a final 13-5 margin, Courtney Dumain made three saves in earning the shutout for her second win of the season.

The Lady Spartans return to ECC action this Saturday, September 30, hosting the University of Bridgeport. Kickoff time is 12:00 noon, and the women's contest is the front end of a double-header, with the men's teams to follow.
