Lady Spartans Fall Short in 2-1 Setback at Bridgeport

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision in an East Coast Conference contest at the University of Bridgeport. With the loss, the Lady Spartans drop to 3-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play, with Bridgeport improving to 4-3-0, 2-1-0.

Bridgeport outshot STAC by a 6-1 margin in the first half and scored both goals that would prove to be the difference. Elin Eklund netted her first of the season at 11:59 on a rebound of a shot by Anisha Hill to put the hosts on top. The Purple Knights added what proved to be in important insurance tally at 39:45 when Eklund scored her second off a cross from Rebecca Niblett.

STAC rebounded in the second half, trimming the deficit to 2-1 when Kelsey Ardizzone scored her third goal of the season, burying a cross from Mekenzi Moreau at 55:43. That was as close as the Lady Spartans were to get, however, as goalkeeper Courtney Dumain's seven saves kept the game close but the visitors were unable to find the equalizer. Bridgeport settled for a 14-8 overall edge in shots, with netminder Jennifer Weldellius making five saves to earn the win.

The Lady Spartans will travel to face Washington Adventist in a non-conference game at 11:00 am Sunday before returning to Spartan Field, where they will play seven of their final eight games at home. That string starts with an ECC battle against Roberts Wesleyan College on Thursday, October 4, at 1:00 pm.
