The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team fell to a 2-0 defeat against Mercy College in an East Coast Conference contest. With their setback in the 2018 home opener, the Lady Spartans drop to 2-2, 1-1 with Mercy improving to 3-1, 1-0.
One year ago, Mercy captured the ECC Championship before advancing to the semi-finals of the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament. The Mavericks broke on top quickly when Trista Seara put on a nice move and scored just 3:30 into the contest to put the visitors on top. The Lady Spartans rebounded, however, carrying the majority of the action for the remainder of the half with a 9-4 advantage in shots, though Mercy goalkeeper Melissa Torres turned aside six shots to keep her team on top.
STAC remained in the hunt until Haley Noble took a through ball from Destiny Guerra to provide a big insurance marker at 73:28 to make the score 2-0. The Lady Spartans struggled to generate offense the rest of the way as the final shots tally was 10-10, though netminder Courtney Dumain kept the hosts close with five second-half saves.
The Lady Spartans return to action on Tuesday, September 18, hosting nearby rival Nyack College in a 3:00 pm start at Spartan Field. They then play the next three on the road, starting with an ECC match at Queens College on Saturday, September 22.
