Moreau Strikes Early, Lady Spartans Hold Off Roberts Wesleyan for 1-0 Triumph

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team defeated Roberts Wesleyan College, 1-0, in an East Coast Conference battle at Spartan Field. The Lady Spartans have won two straight to improve to 5-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the ECC, with RWC falling to 2-6-2, 1-4-0.

STAC built the lone tally of the day with a Sarah Colotti corralling a goal kick near midfield and feeding Mekenzie Moreau for a run down the left side. Moreau's first shot attempt was deflected back to her, after which she made a nifty move and converted from a tough angle to put the hosts on top at 6:35. Scoring chances were hard to come by for the rest of the day, with the Lady Spartans holding just a 9-8 edge in total shots for the rest of the day.

As has been the case often during their recent 5-2-1 string over the last eight games, tight defense combined with the solid goalkeeping of Courtney Dumain to keep the Redhawks off the board. Dumain recorded six saves to earn her third shutout of the year, lowering her goals against average to 1.10, currently third in the conference. It was also the second straight shutout, with STAC allowing just six goals over the aforementioned eight-game span.

The home contest was the first in a season-ending string of seven of eight games to be played at Spartan Field, with that string continuing with an ECC showdown as NYIT pays a visit on Sunday, October 7, for a noon start. That is the front end of double-header action, to be followed by the men's team's squaring off.
