Second Half PK Goal the Difference in STAC's 1-0 Loss at Bridgeport

Bridgeport, Conn. – A penalty kick goal scored in the 48th minute proved to be the difference-maker in Saturday afternoon's game between the St. Thomas Aquinas Women's Soccer team and the University of Bridgeport, as it lifted the Purple Knights past the Spartans to a 1-0 result.

The strike came after a relatively quiet 47 minutes of action at Knights Field, with only eight combined shots having been taken by the two teams up until that point.

STAC posted three shots and earned three corner kicks during the first half, while Bridgeport recorded four shots and took three corners in the first 45 minutes of action, with the match remaining scoreless.

Coming out of the intermission, the host Purple Knights controlled play and just 2:18 into the stanza, Evelyn Hammer was awarded a penalty kick as a result of being tripped up in the penalty area, while intercepting a pass from the STAC defense. Hammer struck for the first goal of the afternoon, converting on the PK with a boot to the top right corner of the net, past Spartans keeper Colleen Stevens.

The last 42 minutes of action was all Bridgeport, as it continually worked the ball deep into the STAC zone, with the hopes of giving themselves some breathing room with an insurance goal. UB held a 14-2 shots advantage following Hammer's PK goal, and kept the ball out of their end of the field to pick up the shutout victory.

STAC fell to 4-8 (2-5 ECC) on the season with the result, while Bridgeport improved to 7-6-1 (2-3-1 ECC).
