Spartans Topped by Goldey-Beacom, 5-1

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Soccer team dropped a non-conference tilt to Goldey-Beacom College, 5-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field

The Spartans (4-9) were outshot by the Lightning (8-6), 26-9 in the contest. Goldey-Beacom also held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks

Goldey-Beacom went into the half with a 2-1 advantage and used three second-half goals to pull away and secure the win. 

STAC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

  • Ileana Santiago scored the lone goal of the match for St. Thomas Aquinas, which is her second tally of the season.
  • Colleen Stevens (L, 3-7) got the start in net and stopped 13 of 18 shots faced in the contest.
  • Caitlin Speranza led STAC in shots on goal with three.
  • Three other Spartans tallied a shot on the afternoon.


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the third minute, Melayna Immediato would take a through ball pass from Alyssa Ruggieri up the left side and fired a low shot past Colleen Stevens into the right corner of the net to make it 1-0 Goldey-Beacom.
  • The visiting Lightning increased their lead to 2-0 on an own goal by STAC in the 35th minute, as off of a save by Stevens a Spartan defender would attempt to boot the ball out of play, but instead put it in her own net.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas would get themselves on the scoreboard over a minute later on a Ileana Santiago tally, with the assist going to teammate Merari Rodriguez to make it a 2-1 game.
  • Angela Lee would regain the Lightning's two goal advantage in the 51st minute on shot attempt that was meant to be crossed into the box, but instead bent its way into the net to push the score to 3-1
  • The Goldey Beacom lead was extended to three, at 4-1, in the 60th minute after Alyssa Ruggieri found Taylor Owen inside the box for the chip-in goal.
  • The Lightning tacked on one final score in the 77th minute by Alyssa Ruggeri to grab a 5-1 advantage.

St. Thomas Aquinas will close out its 2021 home schedule on Saturday, October 30, taking on Roberts Wesleyan College. Kickoff is scheduled for 10am at Spartan Field with Senior Day festivities to precede the contest.
