STAC Women's Soccer Powers Past Queens, 2-1

Sparkill, N.Y. - Another multi-goal effort powered the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Soccer team past the Queens College Knights by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field in Sparkill.

Rachel Brownell and Colette Martucci scored the goals for the Spartans, whose defensive effort proved to be just enough to hold off the Knights, as STAC moves to 3-5 and 2-2 in ECC play.

Junior goalkeeper Colleen Stevens put together another great performance between the pipes, recording 10 saves, including two spectacular stops on penalty kicks, to lead STAC to the win.

How it Happened
In their final contest for the month of September, STAC weathered an early offensive attack by Queens, as the visitors would take four of the first five shots. Then, a handball in the penalty area by a STAC defender would give the Knights Hayley Matthews a penalty kick 16 minutes into the match. Matthews would proceed to take a hard low shot, which STAC keeper Colleen Stevens would make a diving stop on, to keep the game scoreless.

The Spartans would gain some energy on the Steven's stop and push the tempo of play the rest of the half. Rachel Brownell tallied the first goal of the afternoon with just under four minutes to go in the stanza, as she would put a free kick over the head of Queens keeper Ariana Vargas and into the top of the net to make it a 1-0 game. STAC's slim lead would hold true, as the teams would head to their respective sidelines for the halftime break.

STAC did not take their foot off the gas pedal to start the second half, creating several scoring opportunities. In the 63rd minute it would be Amandajane Fuchs-White who would take the ball down the far sideline and into the box, making a perfect pass through several Knights defenders to teammate Colette Martucci, who would stash it home to expand the Spartans lead to 2-0.

After Martucci's goal, Queens would ramp up the offensive pressure in the hopes of getting back into the game. In the 88th minute, a foul inside of the penalty area would give the Knights their second PK opportunity of the day. Julia Ragone would get stoned on her initial shot and a follow-up rebound by Colleen Stevens to keep it 2-0.

The Knights were able to get a goal on the board via a through ball from Sarah Marino to Emily Hinck with just under two minutes left in the match, but STAC's defense shut down any further talk of a QC comeback and would hold on to win the game, 2-1.
