Early Second Half Tally the Difference in STAC's 1-0 Loss to Staten Island

Sparkill, N.Y. – A goal scored in the 52nd minute proved to be the difference-maker in Saturday's ECC match between the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Soccer team and the College of Staten Island, as it lifted the Dolphins past the Spartans, 1-0.

The strike came after a relatively quiet 51 plus minutes of action at Spartan Field in Sparkill, with only 13 combined shots having been taken by the two teams up until that point.

St. Thomas Aquinas had control of the ball initially, firing off three shots and earning a corner kick within the opening 10 minutes. After the initial pressure from the Spartans, the Dolphins began to tighten up their back line and were able to limit STAC to eight looks by the halftime break, with CSI keeper Sara Villacres having to make only three saves.

On the other side of the field, Staten Island was able to get five shots off in the opening stanza. Spartans netminder Colleen Stevens made two stops to keep the contest scoreless through the first 45 minutes.

Coming out of the intermission, Staten Island would be whistled for a pair of offsides, before the visitors were able to tally the lone goal on the day. In the 52nd minute, Nadia Evola was able to corral a pass through several STAC defenders by teammate Jenna Como and boot it off of the front of her foot past Colleen Stevens to make it 1-0.

STAC had several opportunities to tie the game down the stretch, but the crossbar and Sara Villacres would keep the Spartans off of the scoreboard as the clock would wind down to all zeros, giving CSI the slim margin of victory.
