Women’s Soccer Stages Second-Half Comeback to Top Staten Island, 2-1

Staten Island, N.Y. –  A pair of goals in the second half propelled the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 comeback victory over the College of Staten Island on Saturday afternoon at Dolphins Soccer Park.

The Spartans improve to 2-6 and 1-2 in the ECC on the year, while the Dolphins fall to 0-5-1 and 0-2 in conference play.

Colette Martucci scored her first goal of the season to tie the game, before Jasmine Blue connected on the game-winner, the first of her collegiate career.

CSI got on the board first in the 27th minute when a turnover by the Spartans defence allowed Barbara Serrano to take possession of the ball and make a pass to teammate Christina Lambraia, who put a shot on frame and off the outstretched finger tips of STAC keeper Colleen Stevens to make it 1-0. The first half would end with Staten Island holding the slim one-goal margin, while the hosts also enjoyed a 7-4 shots advantage.

The Spartans came out with a renewed energy in the second half, posting four shots in the stanza, while only allowing one by the opposition.

Colette Martucci tied the game for STAC in the 58th minute. Sarai Rodriguez gathered the ball at midfield and sent a pass up the wing to Martucci, who fired a shot to the left post and past CSI keeper Sara Villacres to even things at 1-1.

Following several close calls, St. Thomas Aquinas finally found the go-ahead goal off the foot of Jasmine Blue in the 83rd minute. A Chloe Fletcher free kick into the box was corralled by Jasmine Blue in a scrum of players, with Blue dancing around several defenders and blasting a shot to the top right corner of the net to give the visitors in maroon and gold a 2-1 lead.

The STAC defense stood strong for the final seven minutes to earn the victory.
