St. Thomas Aquinas College Athletics Welcomes Fredy Guiran as New Women's Soccer Head Coach

Sparkill, N.Y. - After an extensive search, St. Thomas Aquinas College Director of Athletics Nicole Ryan recently announced that Fredy Guiran will be the next head coach of the women's soccer program.

"We are happy to add a coach of Fredy's calibar to our staff", stated Ryan. His experiences as a player, a coach and a mentor will be instrumental for the growth and development of our student-athletes".

Guiran is well respected within the soccer community, having trained many talented women's soccer athletes over the last 20 years with the World Class Football Club, which is just down the road from the college in nearby Orangeburg, N.Y.

The New Jersey native is no stranger to the Rockland County college scene, having served as an Assistant Coach for the women's soccer program at Dominican University in 2021.

In addition, Guiran's college coaching experience includes stops at Division III Rutgers University-Newark (2010) and Division I Seton Hall University (2006-2007, 2009), along with New Jersey City University (Div. III - 2005). He also served as an Assistant Coach for the United States National Team Under-17 squad in 2009.

Guiran, a two-time first team NSCAA All-American (1991 and 1992) at Kean University, is the Cougars career leader in points (184), goals (74) and assists (36) in just three seasons. He helped Kean make three consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearances capped by a National Championship in 1992 to cap his career.

He still ranks first in the Kean record book for goals in a season (31 in 1992) while sharing second place with 29 goals in 1991). He twice posted 74 points in a season (1991 and 1992) – the second most productive seasons on the Cougar books. His 16 assists in 1991 are the second highest season total for the school.

He was named both the NJAC Male Athlete of the Year and the NJAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Year in 1991 after being tabbed the 10-team conference’s Rookie of the Year in 1990. He was a second team NCSAA All-Regional selection as a freshman before gaining first team status as a sophomore and junior. Guiran was the College Soccer Association of New Jersey (CSANJ) Player of the Year in 1991 and 1992 while earning first team honors on that all-state team in all three of his varsity seasons.

Guiran returned to his native Colombia to play in the top professional league where he played for eight teams in 10 seasons, tallying 55 goals.

In 1998, Guiran’s team reached the Copa Libertadores Cup, the South American tournament deciding the continents’ top professional team.

"I am beyond thrilled to be a Spartan and I look forward to working with our team this spring, as we begin to set a new standard and chart a path forward for the program", said Guiran. "As a group we will be humble during training sessions and matches, and no matter what the result is, we will always look forward to the next challenge."
