Knights Top Spartans, 9-0

Knights Top Spartans, 9-0

SPARKILL, NY – On a beautiful Friday afternoon, the St. Thomas Aquinas College women’s tennis team took on yet another regionally ranked opponent in Queens College.  The Lady Spartans did all they could do to thwart perennial power and NCAA Sweet Sixteen participant, but ultimately fell 9-0.

A competitive doubles slate was first up on the docket, as Bianca Signore (Staten Island, NY) and Sara O’Brien (Orangeburg, NY) battled at first doubles but lost 8-3.  Nyenyeri Kanefu (Rutherford, NJ) and Katarina Lopez (New City, NY) teamed up at second doubles and nearly pulled off the upset, but couldn’t muster enough winners while falling 8-5.

In singles action, Signore continued to show her grittiness in taking on some of the region’s top players, but was unable to score enough points for a win.  At second singles, Kanefu started out of the gates hot and was up 3-0 in the first set, but her opponent found her stride and won 6-4, 6-3.

The last match of the day featured Raven DeLeon (Brooklyn, NY), who used her methodical style to make it competitive at fifth singles, but lost 6-2, 6-3.

Next up on the schedule is Molloy, who comes into town for an ECC showdown on Saturday, September 17.  First serve is set for 11:00 AM, weather permitting.
