Women's Tennis Clinches #4 Spot of ECC Playoffs

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's tennis team clinched the #4 spot in the ECC Women's Tennis Championship and will take on Queens College this Friday at 11:00 am.

The Spartans have been on a hot streak as of late winning their last four matches as well as six out of the last eight.  The Spartans won a tough match on Thursday 5-4 at UDC to help secure their spot in the post season.  With the Spartans holding a 4-3 lead, freshman Lovisa Engstrand won the decisive point for the visitors in her typical, grind-it-out style.  Down 5-0 in the first set, Engstrand would win seven consecutive games to stun her opponent, 7-5.  The freshman Swede would make it eight straight games, taking a 1-0 lead in the second set before ultimately winning 6-3 while winning her tenth consecutive singles match.

Cassandra Rohr and senior Carolyn Kopf were also instrumental in the win, earning STAC victories in both doubles and singles.  Rohr paired up with senior Nyenyeri Kanefu while Kopf was partners with Katarina Lopez.  The third senior on the Spartan squad Sara O'Brien finished the regular season strong, winning six of her last ten singles matches and going 7-2 in doubles along side Engstrand in their last ten matches.

Queens enters as the #1 seed and the host of the ECC Championship with a 9-0 record overall and 7-0 in the ECC.  In their last meeting, the Spartans put up a hard fight eventually falling 5-4 to the top seed.  This is the first time the Spartan women's tennis team has been in the post season since 2010.  In 2010, STAC fell to Molloy, 5-2 in the semi finals.  Friday's match is set for 11:00 am.
