MIDDLEBURY, CT – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women’s Tennis team won their fourth consecutive match on Tuesday, taking down East Region for Post University by a 5-2 score. The win marked the first over the Eagles since 2014.
After a lackluster start in doubles action, the Lady Spartans rallied to win five of six singles matches to secure the win. Senior captain Katarina Lopez ’20 (New City, NY) won her fifth-singles match 6-1, 6-1 to get the Spartans on the board. The win marked the 60th of her career, tying Raven DeLeon ’17 (Brooklyn, NY) for the most career wins in program history.
Freshman Ayesha Burnett ’23 (Wellington, New Zealand) made her singles debut at sixth singles in remarkable fashion, posting a 6-2, 6-0 win to give the Spartans a 2-1 match lead they would not relinquish. Cassandra Rohr ’21 (Mallorca, Spain) followed Burnett with a 6-2, 6-2 win at fourth singles.
The clinching point came at third singles, where Eliza Mulder ’23 (Schoonhoven, Netherlands) did her best Picasso impression by painting the lines for a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Carla Mentrup ’22 (Munich, Germany) closed out the scoring for the Spartans with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 1-0 (9) win at second singles.
East Coast Conference play will resume this weekend, when the Spartans will take on the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks on Friday, September 20 at noon, and the Daemen College Wildcats on Saturday, September 21 at 11 AM.
