
Flushing, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team fell in the East Coast Conference semifinals to Queens College, 4-1, on Friday afternoon.
STAC saw its nine-match winning streak (10 unbeaten) snapped by the Knights, who advance to their 10th straight ECC Championship Final.
The battle of #2 (STAC) and #3 (Queens) seeds began with doubles play, where the Knights took two out of three matchups from the Spartans. STAC opended the semifinal with a 6-4 victory at the No 3 position, as the duo of Paula Palero and Eliza Mulder defeated Chloe Certain and Hotaki Shakima. However, Queens would go on to win the next two contests, with the team of Maja Makal and Gabriela Sciarrotta besting Karina Blas and Vera Gak Anagrova, 7-6 at No. 1 and Nathalie Ulander and Lilly Schmidt defeating Samanta Villegas Robles and Elita Silins, 7-5 at No. 2, to give the hosts the first point of the match.
In singles action, St. Thomas Aquinas would get on the scoreboard first via a victory by Samanta Villegas Robles at No. 4 over Shakima Hotaki, 6-0, 6-0. Maja Makal would give Queens back the lead at 2-1 on a 6-1, 6-2 win over Karina Blas at the No. 1 position, while Nathalie Ulander would go on to defeat Viktoriia Pavlovets at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-3 to give the Knights a 3-1 advantage. The match clinching victory would come via the No. 5 position, as Chloe Certain would beat Jemima Parkinson, 6-3, 6-2 to move Queens College onto the championship final, where the Knights will look to win their third straight tournament title, when they take on the top seeded University of the District of Columbia Firebirds on Saturday in Flushing.
