Spartans End Three-Match Skid with 6-1 Victory At Adelphi

Garden City, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team returned to action on Tuesday afternoon, following an 11-day break and the team's Florida spring break tour, and ended a three-match losing streak by downing Adelphi University, 6-1.

STAC improves to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in ECC play, while Adelphi slips to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in the NE10.

The Spartans kicked off the day by taking two of three doubles matches. #3 Amanda Kadiri and Samanta Villegas Robles scored a 6-1 victory over Caterina Federici and Elisabeth Seyfarth. However, the host Panthers were quick to answer, as #1 Katarina Liedbeck and Roisin Boyd took down Viktoriia Pavlovets and Kateryna Kryuchkova to even things at one match apiece. The maroon and gold picked up the first team point on the strength of a 7-5 triumph by #2 Jemima Parkinson and Elita Silins over Astrid Bergh and Carolina Chaves.

When the teams turned their attention to singles play, it would be Adelphi who would strike first, as #1 Katarina Liedbeck beat Viktoriia Pavlovets 6-1, 6-1. However, that would be the end of the road for the Panthers, because STAC would take the next five bouts, with #4 Samanta Villegas Robles besting Caterina Federici 6-1, 6-2 and #2 Amanda Kadiri downing Roisin Boyd 7-5, 6-0 to take a commanding 3-1 advantage. The Spartans clinched things when #6 Sun Zhuoxuan blanked Elisabeth Seyfarth 6-0, 6-0. Then, with the match already in hand, #3 Elise Semmartin defeated Astrid Bergh 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and #5 Elita Silins downed Carolina Chaves 6-1, 6-3 to wrap up the afternoon in Garden City.

THE ROCKHILL REPORT

"I expected that we might struggle a bit today as we hadn't played a match in over a week but the team felt otherwise", stated Head Coach Dan Rockhill. "Adelphi is the NE-10 Champion and the 33rd ranked team in the country so this is a big win for us."

"I am happy for Amanda (Kadiri) and Elise (Semmartin) as they continue to play well and get us points", said Rockhill. "It is also nice to see Samy (Villegas Robles) and Elita (Silins) return to the top of their form."

"This group is so much fun to coach and I hope they continue to improve and grow together", remarked Rockhill.
