Bronx, N.Y. - In battle between Atlantic 10 Champions versus East Coast Conference Champions, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Division I Fordham University on Saturday afternoon at the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts.
STAC slips to 12-6 overall, while Fordham improves to 12-5 and keeps its win streak rolling, now at eight consecutive matches.
Fordham opened play by taking two of three doubles matches, with No. 2 Franny Shea & Julianne Nguyen shutting out Elita Silins & Jemima Parkinson, 6-0 followed by No. 1 Xiaowei Hu & Eleni Fasoula defeating Viktoriia Pavlovets & Kateryna Kryuchkova, 6-1.
In singles action, the Rams moved quickly to end the match, winning five of six bouts to take the team victory. No. 3 Eleni Fasoula bested Elise Semmartin 6-1, 6-2 and No. 6 Camila Baeza beat Kateryna Kryuchkova 6-2, 6-2 to hold a commanding 3-0 lead. However, No. 2 Amanda Kadiri broke Fordham's win spree by taking down Xiaowei Hu 7-5, 6-4. The hosts then took the final three matches to put a stop to any thought of a Spartans' comeback and closed out the day, as No. 4 Franny Shea downed Samanta Villegas Robles 6-0, 6-4, No. 1 Raffaela Alhach slipped past Viktoriia Pavlovets 7-5, 6-3 and No. 5 Demi Jhaveri sent Elita Silins to a three set defeat 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10)
