
West Haven, Conn. - The #4-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team opened the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament with a 4-0 shutout victory over #5 seed Adelphi University on Monday afternoon at the New Haven Tennis Courts in Connecticut.
STAC improves to 14-5 on the season and advances to the East Region Finals against the top-seed and hosts from University of New Haven. Meanwhile, Adelphi closes its 2024-2025 run at 10-7.
The Spartans opened doubles action with a victory at the No. 3 position, as the team of Mar Caneves Bufi & Elise Semmartin defeated Sara Lindeman & Genesis Beltran, 6-0. Then the duo of Sun Zhuoxuan & Kateryna Kryuchkova scored a 6-2 triumph over Caterina Federici & Zuzanna Witkowska at the No. 2 spot to take the first team point from Adelphi.
When singles play commenced, STAC made quick work of the Panthers, sweeping the first three individual competitions to pick up the overall victory and move on in the tournament. Mar Caneves Bufi dispatched her opponent, Caterina Federici via a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. Next, Kateryna Kryuchkova battled Roisin Boyd, but ultimately took a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Finally, Elise Semmartin closed things out with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph against Sara Lindeman to officially end the match.
