STAC Women's Triathlon Punches Ticket to USAT Nationals

Huddleston, Va. - On a beautiful Saturday at Smith Mountain Lake, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Triathlon team lined up for the Women's Collegiate Triathlon East Regional Qualifier.

Competing against not only the best Division II women in the East, but also Division I athletes as well, our Spartans held their own and performed great. STAC was led by sophomore Hanna Jung who finished 17th in D2, and Junior Phoebe Hemmerling who finished 28th among D2 participants.

Jung got out of the water with a good group of athletes, and worked hard to move up a few spots on the bike. Hemmerling, nursing a lower body injury that wasn’t 100%, managed to swim well and hold her position on the bike. Phoebe then proceeded to actually move up a spot on the run, showing her grit and determination, as she improved her time by two minutes from last year. Hanna ran strong as well, and both punched their tickets to National Championships next month in Tempe, Arizona!

“I’m super excited for the girls", said Head Coach Jeff Boyer. "They worked hard this season to improve on last year’s results, and I’m proud of what they’ve accomplished."

As mentioned, Phoebe Hemmerling and Hanna Jung will make their way to Tempe, Arizona, along with Coaches Boyer and Lubaszka, for the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships, which will be held on November 12.
