Sparkill, N.Y. - Beginning a season long five-match homestand on Wednesday evening, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Queens College at Aquinas Hall.

How it Happened

First Set: 25-23 Queens

  • Matching up against the Knights, the first set saw a total of five ties and one lead change.
  • STAC began the set with a 3-0 lead, before Queens tied things at 3-3. With the set tied at 7-7, the Knights would start a 5-1 run to take a 12-8 lead.
  • The Spartans would keep the first set within two points but with the Knights leading 16-14, a 3-0 run would see the visitors take a 19-14 advantage.
  • However, the hosts would battle back with a 4-0 run of their own, as they cut the Queens advantage down to just one at 19-18.
  • A kill by the Knights would start a 3-0 run as Queens took a 22-18 advantage.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas would battle back to cut the advantage down to 22-21, before both sides traded points. Unfortunately, a Spartans service error would give the Knights a 1-0 match lead with a 25-23 first set victory.

Second Set: 25-16 Queens

  • The second set began with a Knights kill and the visitors would remain ahead despite the maroon and gold tying the set on two separate occasions.
  • Leading 11-10, two kills and a service ace gave Queens a 14-10 advantage.
  • However, the Spartans would once again rally with a 4-1 run to cut the deficit down to 15-14.
  • Another Knights kill would start a 10-2 run that gave Queens a commanding 2-0 lead, with a 25-16 second set victory.

Third Set: 25-17 Queens

  • Queens began the third set with back-to-back kills as the Knights opened with a 4-1 run.
  • STAC cut the Knights advantage down to 8-6, but another run, this time 5-0, would see Queens take command of the third set, 13-6.
  • A mini 2-0 run by the Spartans cut the score down to 13-8 before a 4-0 run to put the Knights up 17-8. The visitors would not surrender their modest lead to earn a 25-17 third set victory and complete the 3-0 sweep.
