Spartans Shine at C.W. Post Invitational

The Lady Spartans made a statement at the C.W. Post Invitational finishing 4th overall in a field of 14.  Junior Sarah Callagy set a new STAC 5K Record finishing the 5K race in 19:43, while two of her teammates also set personal records.  Freshman Mike Galonski paced the men's team in 27:07 leading them to a 5th place finish.

Callagy broke a record that she set at the UAlbany Invitational last October (19:46).  She was the second DII finisher (6th overall) and lead the East Coast Conference in this preview race of the conference championship course.  Freshman Keeley Bateman stayed close to Callagy, crossing the line in 19:51 setting a personal record of her own as the third DII finisher(8th overall).  Junior Chelsea Klinger was the 6th DII finisher completing the course in 20:36.  Classmate Lisa Brevogel added support and fought off conference opponents with a time of 23:22.  Lauren Karpoich continued to drop her time taking almost a minute off last week's collegiate debut performance.  She finished in 23:49 locking up 4th place for the Lady Spartans.

In the men's race, Galonski continied to lead the Spartan's with a 5th place DII finsh (13th overall).  Graduate student Vinny Modaferri came through the finish at 27:36 which was good for a 10th place DII finish (22nd overall).  Classmate Einar Brissing finished in a time of 28:22.  The next four Spartan's to cross the line were freshmen.  Michael Kraus (29:14), Matthew Buell (30:10), Kyle Curran (30:28) and Jon Laslo (33:17) all ran solid races and personal bests while providing depth to the Spartan roster.  Junior Matt Muniz, senior Dan Nilsen and freshman Chris McKenna rounded out the STAC squad.

The Spartans return to action in two weeks at the Brooks Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh College in Pennsylvania.  They will compete in the white race with the men starting at 1:45PM followed by the women at 2:30 PM.
