Lady Spartans win CTC Championship; Men Take 2nd

Rookie Kristen Borriello won the CTC Championship race leading her team to their first Collegiate Track Conference Championship.  The Lady Spartans also finished first in the Jack St Clair Memorial.  The men's squad, led by senior Joe Chegwidden finished 2nd in the CTC Championship and 3rd in the Jack St. Clair Memorial.

Borriello's first place finish in the CTC Championships marks her first collegiate win in her first ever 6K race at the challenging Belmont Plataeu course.  She crossed the line in 24:11.  Sophomore Katie O'Grady set a collegiate personal record of 24:29 and was the second finisher for the Lady Spartans.  Meaghan Venterola ran a solid race finishing just thirty seconds later in 24:59.  Junior Gabby Sloezen has been consistently strong this season and came in at 25:08.  The final STAC scorer was freshman Angelica Matwiejczuk who completed the 6K course in 25:18.  The next two finishers, Ally Borriello (25:21) and Ashley Weintraub (25:54) helped to solidify the win.

They Lady Spartans first place finish in the Jack St. Clair Memorial Race marks their 2nd Invitational win in two weeks.  They beat host Philadelphia University by 15 points.  This strong performance follows their program best #6 ranking in the East Region which was announced last week.

The Spartan men showed a strong team effort in their 2nd Place finish in the CTC Championship.  The team consisting of only one senior and no juniors stepped up to show what they are made of.  Senior Joe Chegwidden set the pace with his 4th place finish in 27:56.  Freshman Vinny Vazquez followed his lead and kept him in sight which lead to an 8th place finish in 28:27.  Classmate Asaad Jeffries used a late kick to close the gap to finish 3 places later in 28:49. Rounding out the Spartan scorers were sophomores Ryan Gasser (30:02) and Jamer Linares (30:13).  Two more sophomores, Chris Panepinto and Steven McNiff helped with displacement finishing in 30:56 and 31:04 respectively.

While only one race was run today, it was scored as both the CTC Championship and the Jack St. Clair Memorial.  Only members of the Collegiate Track Conference were scored in those results creating a smaller field.

The STAC cross country teams will return to action on Friday, October 24th at the Haverford Invitational.
