The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Cross Country team has qualified for the program's first-ever National Championship. The Spartans finished 3rd in the NCAA East Regional race at Hopkinton Fairgrounds in New Hampshire. Meaghan Ventarola broke the STAC 6K school record clocking a time of 22:07. She finished in 12th place.
While Ventarola set the new record, sophomore Kristen Borriello finished just one second and one place behind her. Her time of 22:08 was a new personal record. Senior Gabriela Sloezen also ran a personal best of 22:40 which put her in 27th place. Junior Katie'O'Grady was the fourth STAC runner to finish at 23:11. Seniors Cecelia Pfleging (24:03) and Rebecca Fortoul (25:19) and junior Patricia Nersten (25:34) were instrumental in the final results.
The team has continued to build on the recent success of the program. The Spartans have finished in the top 3 in every race this season. They finished in 3rd place at the East Coast Conference Championship where four runners earned All-Conference honors. At that race, Borriello set the new Spartan 5K record with a time of 18:13. Ventarola and Borriello were each named ECC runner of the week once this season.
The top three teams at the regional race are automatic quaifiers for the 2015 NCAA DII Cross Country National Championship which will be held in Joplin, Missouri on November 21st. In 2014, the Spartans finished 5th at the race which was a program best at that time.
