Spartans Finish First Round of the NCAA Championship Tied for 14th Place

The St. Thomas Aquinas men's golf team finished the opening round of the NCAA Championship tied for 14th place.  Michael Miranda and Michael Frizalone each finished with scores of 73 to shoot 1-over in their first round. 

Starting on the 10th hole, Miranda went even par for his first nine with two birdies and two bogeys. Miranda had his third birdie and two more bogeys on the back nine to finish 1-over.  Frizalone shot 1-over during his first nine and then went on to shoot even par on the back nine with two birdies and three bogeys.

Kevin Gately shot a 3-over, 75 for his round with a strong finish including two of his three birdies coming on his 16th and 17th hole.  Chris Gentle and Brendan Hunter shot 77 and 78 respectively.  

The Spartans shot 298 as a team twenty strokes behind the leaders, St. Leo University at 278. The top three teams in the field shot under par with Chico State and Florida Southern tied for second place at 282.  Barry University shot 288, which is even par and ten strokes ahead of the Spartans.
