Spartans Split with Mavericks

The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team split with Mercy College on Saturday afternoon.  STAC won 9-7 in the first game putting together 17 hits.  In game two, the Spartans fell 8-4 leaving 6 stranded.

Danielle DiModugno's RBI single to score Erin McCarthy put the Spartans on the scoreboard in the 1st inning.  The Mavericks answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie things up.  Julie Sosnicki put STAC back on top with a 2 RBI double in the second inning scoring Samantha McDonald and Nikolette Novela.

With the game tied again at 4 apiece, the Spartans put together a 4 run 5th inning highlighted by a 2 RBI double by McDonald.  The Spartans maintained their lead for the rest of the game.  McDonald added another RBI single in the 7th which secured the win as the Mavericks late rally fell short. Samantha McDonald went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and a run.  Julie Sosnicki went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and also picked up the win on the mound.

In game two, the Mavericks got on the board early opening a 4-0 lead.  STAC scored two runs in the 5th, highlighted by an RBI single from Brittany Mangan.  The Spartans added two more runs in the 7th but it was not enough to close the gap.
